Architecture colleges teach a combination of theoretical and practical skills, including:
1. Design principles and theories
2. Building technologies and materials
3. Structural systems and construction methods
4. Environmental sustainability and energy efficiency
5. Urban planning and contextuality
6. Professional practice and ethics
7. History of architecture
8. Computational design and software (CAD, BIM, etc.)
9. Building information modelling (BIM)
10. Communication and presentation skills
However, due to rapid technological advancements, within 5 years of graduation, some skills and knowledge may become outdated. Half a decade of time faces various changes in building codes and regulations, shifts in design trends and styles, newer construction methods, evolving industry software and tools and most importantly ever-changing clients’ needs and expectations.
To stay relevant, architects must pursue continuous learning and professional development. Architecture is a dynamic field and it’s important to stay current in order to thrive. My personal experience strongly recommends setting aside dedicated time for learning by creating a personalized learning plan in order to explore interdisciplinary knowledge spectrums. Engaging with industry experts, thought leaders, participating in design competition and challenges and most importantly reflecting on past projects and lessons learned. These have proven necessary to enhance skills, expand the network, stay competitive, drive innovation and achieve success.
